In previous years, filers had only three options through which they could make payments to the IRS for Form 2290 Online Filing: Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), and Checks/Money Orders. However, with the 2020-21 HVUT tax year, filers are now able to submit payments to the IRS using credit cards. While TaxSeer2290 allows you to receive your stamped Schedule 1 document in minutes, credit/debit card payment cannot be done directly on this site to make your actual HVUT payment due to restrictions put in place by the IRS. eFilers will have to complete the filing on Taxseer2290 and go to the IRS site to make the HVUT payment through the credit/debit card. Therefore, we at TaxSeer2290 want to support our users by providing clear instructions on how their IRS payment is integrated into the easy-to-follow, six-step workflow provide by TaxSeer2290.
Important points to consider before opting for Credit/Debit card payment
While credit and debit cards certainly allow for convenience of payment of the TaxSeer2290 service charge, there are a couple of important points to consider when using this option as payment of your actual HVUT tax burden. First, payment processing vendors will often charge a convenience fee of around 2% when you use credit or debit cards as your form of HVUT payment, something to keep in mind especially if you’re filing at a high-volume. Second, your actual HVUT payment must be made separately on the IRS site. While we have provided instructions on how to do so below, it is ultimately the filer’s responsibility to verify that the payment made on the IRS site was actually deducted from your credit card.
How to Pay your HVUT on the IRS Site
Once you file your Form 2290 using TaxSeer2290, you will then be required to make your HVUT payment on the IRS website:
- Go to the IRS Credit or Debit Card payment site
- Under the “Choose your Payment Processor” table, select the officialpayments.com/fed option
- Under the “Business Tax Payments” column, select the “Make a Payment” link
- Scroll down to find the option for “Form 2290 Series – Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return”
- Enter the information requested and follow the online instructions to submit the payment for either the current or previous tax years
After completing these steps, your payment will be processed by a payment processor who will charge a low processing fee. The fees vary by service provider and may be tax deductible. No part of the service fee will be applied to your HVUT tax burden.
Penalty
Be sure to pay your taxes on time! Failure to submit the IRS payment by the required due date will lead to your having to pay a penalty on top of your original HVUT payment. This penalty could amount to up to 4.5% of the total tax amount per month that you owe to the IRS.
